What is Normalization in Montessori?

Normalization is a process that happens in the Montessori classroom (and at home) in which children become more independent, focused, and engaged.

In a normalized environment, children feel comfortable and are able to work independently on tasks for sustained periods of time.

Why is Normalization Important?

There are many benefits of normalization for both children and adults. When children are normalized, they are more likely to be:

– independent

-focused

-engaged

-cooperative

-able to work for sustained periods of time

– wanting to stay in the classroom to work

– choosing work independently

– concentrating for sustained periods of time on chosen work

– being cooperative with others

– displaying good manners

– provide a prepared environment with Montessori materials and furniture

– allow adequate time for uninterrupted work periods
